CHAPTER
FIFTEEN
Curren lost his first game of chess, naturallyâand pretty quickly too. He didnât feel bad about it, though. How could he? When he was getting to spend quality time with his mate, finally. His mate who was turning out to be pretty damn clever.
No, Curren didnât feel bad. All he felt was admiration. For both the complexities of the game that he was finally learning how to playâand for the man fate had chosen for him. What a fucking fantastic choice. In spite of his nobility, Curren had never counted himself particularly lucky, but he felt lucky to be with Dariel. The man wasnât only beautiful, he was smart too, and while his stubborn streak could be frustrating to deal with, Curren thought there was something to be said for his determination to stand by his principles.
Dariel took Currenâs king with a smile and a flourish, and Curren fought the urge to grab him and kiss him.
Because he heard steps drawing closer to his chambers, and he knew they were going to be interrupted soonâwhich was a damn shame, because Curren would have given a lot for a good few uninterrupted hours with his mate. Alas, privacy was a rare commodity for a prince who had a kingdom to take care of.
His advisor knocked before entering, but he didnât wait for Currenâs response, which told Curren that, whatever it was, it couldnât wait.
âYour highness.â Sir Tavis gave a short bow. He studied Dariel curiously, but knew better than to comment on Currenâs guest, or on the game theyâd been playing.
âLet me guess.â Curren turned away from the chess board. âThereâs an urgent matter that requires my attention.â
Sir Tavis glanced at Dariel as if he wasnât sure how wise it was to speak in front of the stranger.
âYouâre free to speak,â Curren allowed.
Sir Tavis nodded. âLord Balfor has been overheard talking to her majesty Queen Mayve and her son.â He lowered his voice as if this next part was shameful for him to say. âI regret to inform you that Prince Earnan was deemed the winner of this last challenge.â
It was nothing that surprised Curren to hear, but the news dampened his mood nonetheless.
âRumor has it that the high lord will have you duel Prince Earnan next,â Sir Tavis continued.
Curren grimaced. âDoes he intend to take us back to the dark ages?â Nobody dueled seriously anymore.
âIt would be a public spectacle.â
Even worse. Curren blew out a breath. The last thing he needed was for the whole kingdom to know of his lack of magical prowess. Was Lord Balfor trying to back him into a corner now that he knew of his affliction?
âItâll be difficult for you to win that in your current state,â Dariel observed.
âThank you,â Curren said flatly. What a reassuring vote of confidence.
âIsnât there any other way to settle this?â Dariel asked. âWhat does your aunt want?â
âPower.â Wasnât it obvious?
âHave you tried negotiating with her to see if thereâs any way you can get an edge that doesnât rely
